Default Breaks Interstate Park

Heading to Breaks Interstate Park for a weekend trip in a couple weeks. What are some good roads to take getting there? Any suggestions on a place to stay for the night? Any other suggestions for that area are welcome.

I remember about 20 years ago riding down there with my Dad and two uncles, we took all back roads which was fine but being so curvy it took us most the day to get there. Keep in mind, when we stopped to eat or a break it was fairly lengthy (they like to shoot the breeze). We arrived just before dark, walked one very short trail, got back on our bikes and headed for home. Needless to say, it was a very late night!

The Mountain Parkway (off of I-64 at Winchester) is a very nice road. It is no longer a toll road. Much of it is limited access and good, scenic road but not "super highway" but rather two lane road through the foothills. That will get you near to Pikeville (really, really grown up in the last 30 years with a lot of congestion!).

My best memories of Breaks was eating in the dining room while watching the clouds move through the gorge far below the dining room windows.

Last time we were down there, we stayed in a room at the lodge. It was nice and not too expensive.

We camped at the park many years ago. A bunch of bicyclists came into the campground! Yes, they pedaled up those narrow mountain roads! They had started on the west coast and were heading for the east coast, it was on the "Bike America transcontinental route".

If you are in the area the natural tunnel they turned into a train tunnel is worth a ride to. As far as staying, Grundy has a small mom and pop still I think and a Comfort Inn but most chain hotels are in Claypool hill I think. Another road to ride while you are there runs from Tazwell to Hungry Mothers park, Va Rt 16. 30 some miles of curves Get to in now before they turn it into another Tail of the Dragon mess. That place waqs soooo much more fun when it was the Crossroads of Time and hardly anyone knew about it

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately we won't be in Virginia other than in the park, time won't allow. This is my wife's first overnite on the bike in 20 years, don't want to push it. We will be leaving Saturday morning, heading down one route and coming back another on Sunday. Probably going to stay in the lodge. Like Ken mentioned its reasonably priced.

Tazwell to Hungrey Mother park.. The road surface is a patch work. Please be careful if you rides this. With it being getting time to pull crops you will find tractors and dirt on the road. Tazwell was kinda ruff the town south of the park is a lot better more motels and hotels.

Well, the wife and I went down there this past weekend. Had a great time! Could have used a third day but have to make due with what's available. We stayed at the lodge and was happy with the room. We ate breakfast at the restaurant next to the lodge and thought it was good. Everyone that worked at the park was very friendly.

One thing I didn't count on was the fog. We were at the restaurant by the time they opened, which was 7am. We planned on leaving right after we ate but the fog was very thick, so we hung out at the room, spending some quality time together .

Thanks for the info guys.
